Fitness "Professional" Sadly this guy and his "health elixir" would fit right in today. It implies that someone who works in this field is a "professional"....right? From Merriam-Webster: a : of, relating to, or characteristic of a profession b : engaged in one of the learned professions c (1) : characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2) : exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace So why the hell is the industry and the people in it so disparate when it comes to "professional" practices? There is no standard operating procedure, it's just a miss-mash of … [Read more...]

Winter is Coming: Get Ready to Ski.
I Have NEVER Skied. Fun Fact: I train a whole bunch of skiers. More Fun(er) Fact: They don't need "Ski Specific" training to improve. People that sell you "sport specific" are often charlatans who don't actually know what sports specific means. And NO sport specific DOES NOT mean the movement kinda sorta LOOKS like the sporting movement. Sport Specific: For an exercise to be classified as "sport specific" it MUST, in the same motor regime, accurately replicate similar joint angle velocities as the sporting movement its self. Most Fun Fact: In my experience, the "training" most skiers (and weekend warriors as a whole) do, isn't training at all. It's … [Read more...]
Con-Men, Fear and Lifestyle Multilevel Marketing (MLM) ….
In College I took a FILM CLASS. Evidently, that qualifies as a "general elective" and makes you a liberal artist, or some BS. But the truth is, I learned a LOT. The one film that I really enjoyed was Elmer Gantry. Elmer is a traveling con-man who shows up in a small midwestern town and gets the people there to join the revivalist church. Long story short, he cons them into paying for salvation. A fire happens, burns down the church (its a giant tent), kills his lady (the purveyor of the church) and he leaves town quoting a great line from the Bible when asked what he's going to do next. What's Elmer Gantry Have to Do With Fitness? Elmer Gantry … [Read more...]
Esoteric Sh@t: Why We Fall For Stuff Like Apple Cider Vinegar
This Just Happened (again): *I've been asked this question al least 20 times in the last month or two.... Client: "What Do You Think About Apple Cider Vinegar?" Me: "What do you mean? I think it makes pulled pork taste good...." Client: "Do you think taking a shot of it before you eat does anything for losing weight?" Me: "Have you ever taken a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar? I haven't, but I'm pretty sure you aint eating sh@t after you do." Apple Cider Vinegar Helps You Lose Weight? Really? Seems too easy right? Mostly, how the hell did we JUST COME ACROSS THIS NOW? We're Drawn to Esoteric, Novel, Unbelievable Sh@t No matter how unbelievable, … [Read more...]
Fake News: Science and The Media, Part 1
*Be forewarned this is the first in a series of posts. There is literally NO TRANSITION from one to the next. The original post was about 7000 words and aint no body got time for that. So I chopped it up into readable bites. Literally I decided on what I thought were good points to rest and CUT and PASTE into the next post. So they do stop and start a bit abruptly, but you're smart and can handle it. The intention is to educate a bit on some science(y) type stuff you may not really understand so that you have the tools to be more mistrustful educated and skeptical about media driven science. So the next time you hear "A new study out today" from some mouthpiece on the … [Read more...]
One is Greater than Zero
As I've said before, I think, we have developed into an excuse based culture. Instead of finding a way, we've learned to look for a way out. In that vain.. We're one month into the new year. Hows that Exercise and Eat better resolution working for ya? If you're like a lot of people, it's not. You probably started strong but fell into the perfection trap. <---I made that term up, I think. Personally, I think the "perfection trap" is an excuse veiled as an actual reason. Kinda like the false sacrifice.. Here's how this works: "I'm going to work out for 60 minutes 5 times a week." And while motivation is high and you're prioritizing exercise, it works … [Read more...]
Maybe You Shouldn’t Do Yoga?
What Do You Think About Yoga? I think my back hurts... At First My Mind is All Like: "It's a really good thing that teaches calmness, focus, controlled breathing and body awareness." But My Mouth Goes (after I give it some thought): "You probably shouldn't do it." Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa??? Why I don't recommend Yoga to most people. From my experience, Americanized yoga, what you'd probably be doing, is usually a real Sh@t fest. Full disclosure: I've NEVER taken a Yoga Class. For realzzzz I know you're mad right now. You're all like, "You're such a hypocrite, I like yoga. It's so kool. I've taught it for sooo long and it's awesome and I'm awesome and you … [Read more...]
On Gym Etiquette and not Being “That Guy”.
You're Gonna Do It This Year. You're going to stop spending 25% of your day ingesting worthless, no low value infotainment at he the price of your health and wellbeing. [Tweet "It's ok, Kim, Khloe and Kourtney won't even know you're gone and they can keep up with themselves."] Hell, you made a New Years Resolution. Like that means anything. But sarcasm aside, this is what you're dealing with: It gets rough. Mostly cause it's like 10lbs of sh@t in a 5lbs bag, but partly cause there are lots of total A-holes out there. Here's your, New to the Whole Fitness Thing, survival guide. Lets start things off with the basics: Don't curl in the squat rack. This … [Read more...]
