Actual conversation:
Q: “What can I do to tone up my stomach?”
A: “Watch what you eat and get some type of exercise on almost everyday.”
Enter puzzled look of bewilderment…..
Q: “You mean there’s no ONE exercise I can do to lose weight in my stomach?”
A: “Table push-aways work best.”
Q:“How do you do those?”
A: “When you sit down to eat. Push yourself away from the table.”
Enter look of frustration, like I’m holding back some type of deeply kept fitness industry secret given only to those who pay the entry fee to the guild….
A: “There’s no magic bullet. Eat less, move more, make better food choices. I really can’t give you a program with out an assessment, I don’t know what’s appropriate for YOU, your strengths and limitations.”
Q: “How come you never tell me what to do? What do people pay you for anyway?”
Look of puzzlement on my part.
Actually, I told you exactly what to do,
“Eat less, move more, make better food choices”
That’s it..for beginners, that’s ALL IT TAKES. No fancy programs or special exercises, just some work, sacrifice and mot of all change ..problem was..
You didn’t like that, THE TRUE ANSWER, the one that involves CHANGE and WORK.
You wanted some, As Seen on TV, quick fix…
“Eat what you want and lose weight”
“Do this for 5 minutes 3 times a week”
“Hook these electrodes up to your stomach and you’ll be jacked and tan”
Hell, even the TV sh@t takes time…. P90X takes 3 months.
90, as in 90 days, guess we didn’t think about that…….
So basically you wanted a way out, NOT an answer because I gave you that…in case you didn’t pick up on it yet..
“Eat less, move more, make better food choices.”
See there are no quick fixes, not in fitness, life, not in anything.
It’s really that simple…..
If you want the results, you have to put in the work.
If someone else has achieved the results you are after; realize before you even ask, “How do I get there”, work, usually long, hard and not always fun was involved and you’ll have to go through the same process.
You’ll have to make the same choices, sacrifices and decisions….but at least you’ll know the path to follow.
Think about it this way:
“It’s NOT a sacrifice if you want the outcome associated with it more than you want the outcome you currently have.
It’s a decision to change.”
The difference is, if you find someone who’s gone through it, who has achieved those results and you LISTEN to what they say and then ACT on it…Your process MAY be easier.
But it’s still going to take effort, perseverance, dedication….CONSISTENT ACTION.
Most people choose to be delusional think there are actual quick fixes, magic bullets and instant cures so that’s what they spend time, energy and money looking for endlessly instead of taking that same time, money and energy just getting started down a proven path.
TV, Magazines and the interwebzz give people the false hope sense that “cover model”, “red carpet”, “US Magazine”: OMG look at this, that and the other celebrity on vacation in this tropical local, type bodies are achieved with only a few 20 minute walks and a few crunches a week.
Lie:
“I walk a lot and do Yoga” – said by every celebrity ever…
Truth:
“I hate it when celebrities say they never exercise but are really in the gym five days a week,” says Giuliana. “So I’ll be honest: I run an hour a day, weight-train four times a week, and watch what I eat.”- Gulianna Rancic
There are NO quick fixes on the road to any success.
Only choices, decisions, actions and outcomes.
Then I thought about this line:
“What do people pay you for anyway?
Simple..
They pay me to be Yoda..to be a coach.
I’m get paid to show them the best path to travel….to de-clutter the message, separate the Signal and the Noise.
They pay me to come up with the most efficient plan so they get the most out of their work and achieve their goals faster.
They’re not looking for magic bullets and secret exercises, they’ve gotten past that, they’ve taken responsibility and decided to change. They’re just trying to get the best return on their time, effort and money.
They’re looking for someone to pull their X-Wing out of the dagobah swamp know the way, show the way and get them there faster than they could on their own.
Quick Story:
A plumber comes to the house to fix a clogged pipe. He takes out a hammer and taps on the pipe once, the water flow comes back and all is well again.
He bills the homeowner $500. The homeowner responds with, “$500? All you did was hit a pipe”?
The plumber responds with, “It’s only $1 to hit the pipe. It’s $499 to know where and how to hit it“. – Totally Stolen from Jon Goodman @ The Personal Trainer Development Center
That’s what I get paid for….NOT peddling snake oil, false hope and lies.
